Fury of the Immortals
Spheres of Power
The Spheres of Power are Energy, Matter, Thought, Time and Entropy. They are the fundamental forces or ingredients that govern the workings of the entire universe. Each plane, including the Prime Material Plane, are made up of each of these forces and their characteristics are determined by the balance of these forces. They are great sources of power for those who can tap into them. Sometimes they are venerated directly as the forces they are or sometimes through the Immortals most closely associated with them. The most powerful Immortals of each Sphere thus tend be known across many nations by many names.
Each Immortal serves a specific Sphere of Power. Therefore, they constantly vie amongst themselves and through their followers to increase the power of their Sphere while holding the other Spheres in balance. If the Spheres were ever to get too far out of balance, it would result in catastrophe.
Further, each of the major races of Mystara tend to be associated with a particular sphere. Humans, their societies in a constant state of change and masters of wizardly magic, are reflective of the sphere of Energy. Dwarves, whose societies are built on rock-solid traditions and transforming the earth, are reflective of the sphere of Matter. Elves, whose long, contemplative lives make them prone to philosophy and air magics, are reflective of the sphere of Thought. Halfings, who often remind the other races to mindful of lessons from the past, are reflective of the sphere of Time. Orcs, and other goblinoids, who are often bent on destruction of existing orders, are seen as agents of the sphere of Entropy. So, like the Spheres themselves, it is often said that the races must also maintain a balance to avoid catastrophe.
